FAQ
What is a board-certified Dermatologist?
A board-certified dermatologist has extensive training, which allows them to accurately diagnose and properly treat more than 3,000 diseases of the skin, hair, and nails as well as cosmetic concerns. Gaining the expertise to provide this level of care takes many years of education. When it comes to diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the skin, hair, and nails, no one has completed more training than a board-certified dermatologist. Before they can begin practicing, dermatologists receive more than a decade of training including:
- Four years of university to earn a Bachelor’s degree
- Four years of medical school to become a Medical Doctor
- A year-long internship in medicine
- Three years of residency in Dermatology, working alongside experienced doctors and completing 12,000-16,000 hours of treating patients
- Passing a board examination from the American Board of Dermatology, which is a challenging exam that tests the dermatologist on the knowledge and skills acquired during their years of training including all topics of medical, pediatric, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology
- Participation in continuing certification and thus making a commitment to stay current on the latest dermatology advances
What does it mean to be board certified in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery?
In order to become board-certified in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery, a Dermatologist must be board certified in general dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology and then successfully pass a rigorous examination specifically in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery. This subspecialty involves the study, diagnosis, and surgical treatment of patients with high-risk cutaneous malignancies. One aspect is Mohs micrographic surgery, a specialized technique for treating skin cancers. Another aspect is reconstructive surgery, to repair skin defects after the removal of a tumor. A third aspect incorporates staging and treatment options for patients with cutaneous malignancies and cancer syndromes.
Why partner with a board-certified Dermatologist?
Everyone’s skin is unique and no one understands your skin better than a board-certified dermatologist who knows how to accurately diagnose and properly treat a wide variety of skin conditions from deadly skin cancers to warts. They have expertise in caring for conditions ranging from long-term diseases caused by problems with your immune system and allergic reactions to hair loss and infections caused by bacteria or viruses.
Dermatologists understand the interaction between the skin and the rest of the body. What seems like a simple rash might be a sign of an underlying disease. Each disease requires different treatment, so if you are not diagnosed correctly, then the treatment may not be correct.
Patients see dermatologists for issues that are much more than skin deep. Problems with their skin can harm patients’ sense of self-worth, create discomfort that can make everyday activities difficult, and, in some instances, threaten lives.
I have a high deductible plan, how much will my visit cost me?
If you have a high deductible plan, you are responsible for 100% of your health bills until your deductible is met even when you see an in-network physician. We know that this can be intimidating especially when you aren’t usually made aware of costs before services are provided. At McGoey Dermatology, we believe in cost transparency and we will discuss costs with you prior to you committing to procedures or visits. You can call us to learn more!
What is a full body skin examination?
A full body skin examination can be thought of as a skin cancer screening. The focus of this appointment is an examination in which Dr. McGoey looks at your skin from head to toe in order to identify any areas of medical concern including cancers or precancers. It is important to arrive at your appointment without makeup and ideally without nail polish, so that Dr. McGoey can evaluate all aspects of your skin. You can use moisturizer the day of the appointment as this does not affect her ability to identify any areas of concern.
What can I expect from a cosmetic consultation?
After discussing your cosmetic concerns with Dr. McGoey, she will perform an evaluation of your face including bone structure as well skin and soft tissue quality in order to identify which treatment modalities would be best suited for you.In addition to aesthetic treatments, you will also discuss your skin care needs which can help augment and maintain the best results.
